About
Emily Nicole Connor is a Georgia based contemporary artist exploring the depths of self identity and expression. She prioritizes photography to capture the curiosity of identity through her thought provoking creative portraits. Her meticulously composed photographs breach the suspended stillness of a moment yet to happen, using light, shadow, color, and environment to inflect the tension a journey of self discovery will cause. She finds harmonies with various mediums to execute the vision that best displays her inner fantasy world. She graduates from Columbus State University with a BFA in Photography. Her thesis debuts GIRL CODE, a new innovative zine that invites the conversation of one’s program; the code that makes us work.
Artists Statement
My work is a visual novel that travels the journey of self exploration and discovery. My photographs display a story through creative portraiture of my self imagined curious yet tense fantasy world. My camera serves as a mirror that dissects and reflects the impurities we cannot conceal. Exposed and unable to hide what I lack, the fleeting nuances of an identity in a self that is constantly shifting, is captured in a single still second. My photographs take on the potential quiet pause before the enormity of the moment is finished. I am most interested in reflecting the pressure rumbling between control in fantasy and complete rupture of reality; the stand still silence before the last tremble of thunder shakes.
GIRL CODE is a new age zine that offers consideration to our programming: how does our code make us work? Uncovering FEMALE introduces the years-long journey I have been led through by FEMALE, a quiet force that leads me through the passage of reclaiming a self lost. My photographs follow the theme of the suspended stillness in a moment, the resistance to seeing what is true, and the ultimate direction I am meant to go towards. Shadow and light, uncover and conceal the tense curiosity of my imagined environment. My photos reflect the process of life and death, of becoming what one cannot reject. I am led to the forest, to the tree of rebirth, where I am reborn, remade, and reclaimed.
My artistic pathway is parallel to my inward self revelation, the process simultaneously woven into my final productions. Primarily working in photography, I honor my vision by using whatever medium needed to execute the happenings within myself that cannot be resolved in language.
